Michigan: A Demographic and Electoral Profile

Updated: Sep 18

The Midwestern State of Michigan, with its unique distinction of being the only state with two peninsulas and the only one that touches four of the Great Lakes, stands out on the map. As of 2023, the "Wolverine State" had an estimated population of 10,135,438 people—the 10th-largest population in the U.S.—and accounted for about 3% of the nation's total population. Michigan's population rose by 2.55% between 2010 and 2023, the fifth-lowest rise by any state, and its population density of 179 people per square mile (mi²) is the 18th-highest in the U.S., nearly double the national density of 96 people/mi².

Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, with a 2023 population of around 616,710 people, holds a significant place in history. Once the unquestionable leader in the automotive industry, it earned the city the nickname "Motor City." Since that time, however, the automotive industry has decentralized to many other states, leading to significant urban decay in Detroit.

Michigan, a state with a unique blend of cultural elements, is a ban-the-box state, one of a handful of states that allow online gambling, one of the leading providers of live Christmas trees in the U.S., the home state of both Domino's and Little Caesar's pizza, and one of just over a dozen states in which residents may legally keep pet deer.

According to a 2022 study from the U.S. Census Bureau, this State's local governments consist of 83 counties, 1,773 cities, towns, and villages, and 437 special districts.

The median age of the Michigan population is 39.5. The gender ratio is approximately 50.8% female and 49.2% male.

In terms of religious preference across the State, Michigan has a 70% preference for Christian-based faiths, 5% are affiliated with non-Christian-based faiths, and 24% are unaffiliated with any religion.

According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Michigan was:

White: 76.67%

Black or African American: 13.6%

Two or more races: 4.6%

Asian: 3.2%

Other race: 1.41%

Native American: 0.48%

Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.03%

Muslims are under a million in the State.
