New Hampshire: A Demographic and Electoral Profile

One of the thirteen original colonies, New Hampshire, is one of the six New England states in the northeastern United States. Bordered by Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, and the Canadian province of Quebec, New Hampshire has a total area of 9,349 square miles (mi²), the fifth-smallest in the U.S. New Hampshire's population at the start of 2023 was 1,395,847 people, the tenth-smallest in the U.S.. It comprised 0.41% of the U.S. total.

The largest city in New Hampshire is Manchester, the largest city in northern New England, with a population of 117,468. The state capital, Concord, is its third-largest city, with a population of 44,360. New Hampshire's nicknames include "The Granite State" and "The Mother of Rivers."

New Hampshire, one of the original 13 colonies, entered the Union in June 1788 and has participated in all 59 presidential elections through 2020. The independent nature of New Hampshire voters makes it a battleground state in most election cycles, although it has voted Democratic in all but one election since 1992. In 2020, Joe Biden won by about 7% over Donald Trump. New Hampshire has maintained its allocation of four electoral votes since 1884.

According to a 2022 study from the U.S. Census Bureau, this state's local governments consist of 10 counties, 234 cities, towns, and villages, and 128 special districts.

The median age in New Hampshire is approximately 42.4 years of age. The ratio of females to males in New Hampshire is approximately 50.5% females and 49.5% males.

Regarding religious preferences across the state, New Hampshire has 59% Christian-based faiths, 5% non-Christian-based faiths, and 36% non-affiliated with any religion in particular.
